Average of
high-point returns for Investorfile’s Top Ideas jumps to 368% to end 2020
If ever there was a year to expect the
unexpected, 2020 was it for small cap investments. The first eight weeks of
2020 were great for investors. But, when COVID-19 arrived in North
America, small cap stocks felt the brunt of the pain from the
market crash, with low valuations and little liquidity. Then, from mid-summer
on, there was hope of recovery, which the markets rallied on, and small cap
stocks started to recover some of their losses. This recovery trend is still
present today, but with significant trading volatility based on the headline
news of the day.
Despite
COVID-19, Investorfile still added two new small cap value stock picks to its
list of Top Ideas in 2020: EcoSynthetix (TSX: ECO) and Boardwalktech Software
(TSXV: BWLK). So far, EcoSynthetix is a star performer, with the stock price up
117% in value thus far. The two stocks added replace two of our Top Ideas on our active list that
where subject to takeovers early in 2020: Intrinsyc Technologies and Posera.
The high point
(highest stock price close) average return for all of our Top Ideas since the
inception of the Investorfile blog in December 2011 rose to 368% by the end of
2020. This is up significantly from the average of 318% at the end of 2019,
driven by several Investorfile stocks that hit all-time highs over the past
year. Average current returns at the end of 2020 are 270%, which is essentially
unchanged year-over-year.
